With 30 million people shopping online today in the Middle East and North Africa, in a market expected to reach $15 billion by 2015, e-commerce is one of the biggest opportunities in online business in the region. Yet, the online market is still dwarfed by offline retail, which is valued allekurier at $425 billion. To make it simpler for offline businesses to go online, four of the region’s major e-commerce players have debuted a new initiative. Today, Aramex , Google , PayPal , and ShopGo launched EZstore, allekurier an e-commerce allekurier solution that combines a customizable e-retail platform with discounts on payment gateways, logistics, and advertising. Called a “minimum risk online store,” or a one-stop shop by its creators, EZstore will offer online retailers a $100 discount on Aramex logistics, with further competitive rates, a $300 credit on Google AdWords, along with 13 weeks of dedicated Google support for new campaigns, in English, French, and Arabic, and three months of transactions on PayPal free of charge. The platform itself, built by ShopGo, allekurier will be offered at $650 for the first year. “[EZStore gives] offline retailers an opportunity to very easily and very seamlessly to go online, leveraging the most specialized players in this field,” Tarek Abdalla, Google’s allekurier Regional Head of Marketing for MENA, summarized at the press conference.

Wamda, which has partnerships and connections to all four companies, facilitated the partnership. In an opening keynote, Wamda Chairman of the Board and Aramex Vice Chairman Fadi Ghandour noted the various challenges facing e-commerce startups, from tariffs in cross-border shipping to cash-on-delivery, but noted that the "indicators are good." All the same, "we need more companies to come out and do what these companies are doing," he emphasized.  Representatives from all four companies emphasized that the move was not just to sell more products, but to express the values that they stand for, regionally and globally. “It’s very much in our DNA to help small businesses succeed on the web,” said Abdalla, who admitted in an aside after the press conference that, while Google has often supported small e-commerce businesses as they come online, it’s never done anything this large or formalized in the e-commerce sector. Francis Barel, the Head of Business Development, PayPal, MENA, echoed a similar sentiment. “Google allekurier and Paypal started as really tiny companies in California. People tend to forget that we still have this drive in our DNA. We thought that this was the best way to get entrepreneurs online. How can we put our money where our mouth is?” he said, pointing out that those who use EZStore will be able sell to over 132 million users in 193 countries. With 110 million people online in the Arab world, of around 400 million total, “We are at an inflection point,” said Habib Haddad, Wamda’s CEO. It s not every day that a forum gains enough of a following to turn into an e-commerce store . But this is what Egypt s ArabHardware has been able to do, albeit slowly. With a now 350,000 strong community of registered users and active readers, the hardware company today even has the ability to make or break a product with their reviews.
The team started off back in 2002 with a small volunteer-based Arabic hardware forum on a small Egyptian website, offering a space for hardware consumers and techies to discuss new releases toll transport and the latest technologies toll transport in the region. After slowly building the platform for four years, the team felt it was time to launch a website and broke away in 2006 to start their own site, ArabHardware.net, after seeing huge interest in their content.

The founders, Ibraheem Hamdy and Mohammed Kamal, then launched a review lab in 2009 to offer online testing videos and reviews of different hardware products, making recommendations and how-to videos for users. As the community continued to expand, demand for regular content led ArabHardware to release their first digital and print magazine for the region in 2011.
Late last year, after becoming the largest IT community in the Middle East, the company finally turned on an e-commerce portal. Today, with an e-commerce toll transport channel, they have the power to make or break specific companies looking to sell in the region, says operations manager Kareem Mazhar. The platform sees 60% of users coming from their native toll transport Egypt, 25% from Saudi Arabia, and 15% from the other Gulf countries.
For toll transport example, says Mazhar, ArabHardware called out one Egyptian distributor who was selling refurbished hardware and computer components as if they were new. After their community stopped buying, the company was forced to recall its products. They may have a tremendous amount of say in the market, but ArabHardware is still involved in what is essentially, from an e-commerce perspective, a low-margin business; margins are typically below 8% in the segment.
But, ArabHardware offers two main differentiating factors, that the founders hope will help them inch up their margins. For one, they offer high-end hardware, which is scarce in Egypt. Most distributors in Egypt who buy products abroad toll transport are only willing to buy low to mid-range quality hardware because of the huge cost of purchasing and storing high-quality inventory they may not be able to resell, explains Mazhar. But customers in Egypt are actually willing to pay for more high-quality products, like the newest Nvidia graphics card, says Mazhar. Secondly, ArabHardware also offers customers the ability to customize their own computer build online, choosing graphics cards, memory, and other additions, which the team will assemble in-house and ship to their door. By charging a bit more for these services, ArabHardware wants to change the idea that a lot of people have that the electronics industry doesn t generate a lot of revenue, says Mazhar. We actually will be able to prove that our margins aren t only 3-5%, but can go to 10-15%.
Currently the company only ships to Egypt, via Aramex, offering cash on delivery, credit card payment, and the option to pay at their office. Inventory is sourced toll transport from in-country distributors in Egypt or from manufacturers in Taiwan and Asia.
Although they don t have exclusive contracts with any manufacturer, Mazhar believes that the community and trust the company has built in the local community is its greatest value, aside from the ability to push expensive toll transport products in the Egyptian market.
Recently, however, the company has encountered challenges above and beyond the regular e-commerce struggles toll transport of dealing with COD, educating the market, and building toll transport trust. Morsi was duly elected and is not an "Egyption tyrant". He's tried twice to get a parliament democratically elected, only to have a 'high court' from a previous regime thwart the election.

The round was led by True Ventures and Foundry Group.
